Environment Variables
Transport Modes
stdio (default)
Used for direct integration with AI clients like Claude Desktop. Communication happens via standard input/output.HTTP
Exposes the MCP server over HTTP for remote or networked access:Authorization: Bearer <key> header when MCP_API_KEY is set.
Read-Only Mode for Replica Instances
Make queries read-only by default:- Replica instances: Prevent writes to read replicas in replication setups
- Production safety: Ensure critical data isn’t accidentally modified. Use strict mode so an agent can’t override it.
- Reporting/analytics: Run queries for dashboards without risk of data changes
- Multi-tenant environments: Provide read-only access to certain users. Strict mode applies to every client of a server, so give those users their own MCP server with strict mode on.
Strict read-only mode
query_graph runs read-only queries only. It rejects a call if readOnly is false, or if readOnly is left out and FALKORDB_DEFAULT_READONLY is not true. It also rejects delete_graph. Use strict mode when you give an agent access to data it must not change.
Running Multiple Instances
You can configure multiple MCP servers for different FalkorDB instances:Frequently Asked Questions
What environment variables are required?
What environment variables are required?
Only
FALKORDB_HOST and FALKORDB_PORT are required (defaulting to localhost and 6379). Username, password, transport mode, and logging are all optional configuration options. What is the difference between stdio and HTTP transport?
What is the difference between stdio and HTTP transport?
stdio is the default mode for direct integration with AI clients like Claude Desktop, communicating via standard input/output. HTTP exposes the server over a network port for remote access, supporting API key authentication via Bearer tokens.
How do I secure the HTTP transport mode?
How do I secure the HTTP transport mode?
Set
MCP_API_KEY to a secret value. When configured, clients must include an Authorization: Bearer <key> header in their requests. This is optional but recommended for any network-exposed deployment. Can I connect to multiple FalkorDB instances?
Can I connect to multiple FalkorDB instances?
Yes. Configure multiple MCP server entries in your client config, each with different
FALKORDB_HOST values and settings. For example, have a falkordb-dev instance with writes enabled and a falkordb-prod-replica in read-only mode. When should I use read-only mode?
When should I use read-only mode?
Use it for replica instances, production environments, reporting dashboards, and users who should only read.
FALKORDB_DEFAULT_READONLY=true only sets the default, and an agent can override it per call. When writes must be blocked, also set FALKORDB_STRICT_READONLY=true. Strict mode applies to the whole server, so give read-only users their own MCP server.
